Vancouver Honeybees Brochure


(I wrote this rationale for the small group project, so I’ve included it here)


– giving the feeling of opening one of Jenny’s hives

– provide the right information to make the reader feel engaged and want to do something about it    



  • the images on the outside pages are of reclaimed cedar
    • which is what she uses in her hives 
  • the images are placed in a honeycomb pattern on the inside pages 
  • both of these elements are to enforce the concept 
  • the images included are to give the reader a visual glimpse into some of the elements of beekeeping 
  • by showing people enjoying beekeeping we aim to counter any negative feelings people already have about it 
    • and hope that it puts them in a positive mood about the topic 


  • the first information given to the reader is about the benefits of beekeeping both for the environment and their business
    • the environmental or personal reasons are not the most important information we want the reader to have so we put it on the first page, which will be flipped over when the brochure is fully open
    • the business benefits we felt were more relevant so they were  kept on the main spread, but still aligned with its partner topic before the page is flipped over   
  • the information included in the brochure is to give the reader and understanding of what the company is and does, and what we can do for them
  •  we included a mission statement to give insight to what our company goals are and enable the reader to feel something about us and hopefully connect with us 
    • this also gives the reader knowledge about what kind of company we are, and whether or not they want to align themselves with us
  • the call to action on the far right page of the main spread gives more pieces of incentive to persuade them into taking action

Other Elements:

  • By using a seed paper envelope (the envelope most often being the piece of paper that gets thrown out) we aim to show our dedication to being sustainable
    • and hope that it starts off our interaction on a positive note, and leaves a lasting impression regardless of if the reader takes action when they are done with the brochure


the first page has preliminary sketches, and the last two are more refined concept sketches

This is the finished project, my main role in creating this was image curation and placement, and I worked on the overall layout. I feel like I did a good job with the image layout but I could have done a better job with image curation, I didn’t have many images with smiling faces and my teammate had to find some for the finished project. I would give myself  7/10.


Editorial Spread


The client: Eye magazine

The problem: create 2 spreads for an article in the magazine.

The concept: Eye magazine has a very organized and consistent layout, so I mad sure to spend time understanding their layout choices and rules so I could design my layout to properly suit the magazine. I chose a similar typeface (Gill sans) to the one Eye magazine used (Gill sans Nova) in the edition I was using for reference. I stuck with a strong grid for my layout. The article I chose was about the unfairness of unpaid internships and the potential detriment it could cause to our field of work. I chose my imagery to represent the feelings of; being stuck in a bad situation (referring to the inters themselves who may not be able to speak up due to fear of losing important business connections), feeling like there is no future for you, and the feeling of frustration.

EYEspreadEYEspread2I feel like I did a good job designing my spreads to fit the magazine well, but could have worked more creativity into how I handled the large body of text. 8/10




I designed my resume to express my personality and style. I kept it interesting to look at while still being easy to scan and find the info you need. I decided to use black and white to keep the visual noise down but used the black boldly to still give it a striking look. I think I could have done better with my typography, but I am pretty happy with how my personality came through in the design. 7/10

Sustainability Manifesto



The client for this project was a future employer.

The problem was to design a manifesto poster that described your stand on sustainability.

The concept for my manifesto was about putting options for sustainability into the publics hands. It explains what I believe to be one of the more important aspects of sustainability, and it will help align me with like minded employers. When designing my manifesto I wanted to use subdued and somewhat natural/earthy colours to reflect the mood and tone of sustainability. In the imagery you can see a hand planting seeds in the ground, the hand is representative of my concept and I used the text as the dirt where these ideas and solutions (the leaves) can grow from.


I think what works in my poster is my colour scheme but I think I really could have improved my typography, I would give myself 6.5/10.

Psychedelic hero

Wes Wilson was born in 1937 in California. His interests didn’t start off with art but rather with nature and the outdoors. He studied forestry and horticulture at college before dropping out in 1963. His first experimentation with a psychedelic font was his poster BG-18 which was done for a show at the Fillmore Auditorium. This poster started him on the track of being the father of the psychedelic poster. I love Wes Wilson’s posters because it is very clear the skill and planing that has to go into these types of posters to make them perfect. All the type on his posters perfectly melt together with each other, and the image. He truly is the master of making type come to life.   


Supergraphics innovator

Barbara Solomon was born in 1928 and is a well known graphic designer that is most famous for her supergraphics. In her younger years she studied and worked as a dancer, and studied painting and sculpture at San Francisco Art Institute. Solomon moved to Switzerland in 1956 to study graphic design at the Basel Art Institute. Solomon’s work with supergraphics has been very influential in the graphic design scene. I love her supergraphics because she uses many different ‘textures’ such as bold lines or dots and seamlessly blends them together into beautiful giant pieces of art. Her work is very geometric and rigid but through her carful planing is able to convey movement and flow.
